The Collective’s latest has had the blogosphere in a buzz. Discrete digital maelstroms of bubbling clucking machine twitter give way to anthemic post rave outs that tip their hat to the lush orchestrations and falsetto harmonising of the beach boys.
The Animal Collective’s pet sounds reject compression, the bane of the current loudness war, in favour of a much fuller production palette but so much remains in the treble, the sound is so bright, that prolonged exposure causes a sun sick delirium.
Anything displaying this amount of originality, imagination and musical ambition risks being subjected to more scrutiny than it can possibly bear and the tone of relentless euphoria can get a little exhausting but, like T.V On the Radio, there is a sense of restless intelligence, curiosity and optimism in this music that bodes well for 2009.
The Animal Collective play tomorrow at Postbahnhoff.
